Raising awareness of Knife Crime: Charlie’s Promise founder Martin Cosser returns to Hailsham Academy

On Monday 12 January 2026, students in Year 7 took part in an important and impactful assembly led by Martin Cosser, founder of the anti-knife crime organisation Charlie’s Promise.

The assembly was delivered following Martin Cosser’s visit to the school last year where he was able to speak to the whole school, having a profound impact on both our students and staff. As part of our school’s ongoing commitment to educating young people about personal safety and social responsibility we asked Martin to return to speak to our new cohort of Year 7 students and deliver an additional session for parents and carers.

Martin shared the deeply moving story of the tragic loss of his son, Charlie Cosser, who died as a result of knife crime in 2023. Through his presentation, students learned about the devastating consequences of carrying or using knives — not just for victims, but for families, friends, and entire communities.

He explored missed opportunities and encouraged young people to report any concerns for those who they know might be carrying knives/blades anonymously to Crimestoppers/Fearless on 0800 555111 or online at https://crimestoppers-uk.org/fearless/give-information-anonymously.

While the content was emotional and hard-hitting, it was delivered in a sensitive and age-appropriate manner that left a lasting impression on all who attended. We were extremely proud of our Year 7 students, who showed Martin respect with their engagement in his talk and with some brilliant questions they asked at the end, showing they had taken his words and Charlie’s story on board.

We are grateful to Martin Cosser for delivering such a memorable and meaningful message to our students, staff and parents.

Headteacher, Mrs Chamberlain, commented:

“Having delivered a series of engaging and thought-provoking presentations to students last year, we were privileged to have Martin Cosser return to us to speak to more students and staff.  Our safeguarding lead, Miss Russell, has built a strong link with Martin and his charity, ‘Charlie’s Promise’, and we are grateful to Miss Russell for helping to coordinate today’s events where parents and carers also had the opportunity to attend and hear Martin’s story first-hand.

Every member of our community has had the opportunity to reflect on the impact of the choices they make and the consequences that these choices can lead to. We know that education can transform lives and we genuinely appreciate Martin’s time and commitment in working with our young people, their families, and our staff.”

Charlie’s Promise has now reached over 25,000 students, parents, and educators across the UK, and Martin’s work has been recognised nationally, including receiving the Pride of Britain Award in 2024. His collaboration with Sussex Police and the UK government highlights the importance and impact of this work in educating young people and tackling knife crime through prevention. Charlie’s story was also featured recently in an ITV documentary series titled ‘TikTok: Murder Gone Viral’ which can be viewed on ITVX.

Following the assembly, the school counsellor will be offering drop‑in sessions during break and lunchtime on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday for any students who wish to ask questions or share their thoughts in a safe and supportive environment. If any students feel affected by the issues discussed or would like further guidance, they are encouraged to speak with a member of the Pastoral Team.

Last year Hailsham Academy staff and students raised over £3,000.00 for the charity and will continue to support Martin’s important work this year. Ahead of Martin’s visit, our Year 7 students helped to make Charlie’s Promise friendship bracelets which will be available alongside the charity’s badges for students and staff to purchase this week, with all donations going to the charity.
