Year 6 Bikeability Training
During the week of 18th–22nd May, our Year 6 pupils took part in Bikeability training delivered by East Sussex County Council (ESCC). This valuable programme saw 24 children develop essential cycling skills, confidence, and independence in a safe and supportive environment.
Bikeability is the national standard for cycle training, designed to give children the skills they need to ride safely on the road while also encouraging them to think independently and make informed decisions. The training is delivered by fully qualified instructors, ensuring pupils receive expert guidance throughout.
Over the course of the week, the children completed both Level 1 and Level 2 training. Level 1 focused on building strong foundations, helping pupils to develop basic bike control skills in a traffic-free environment. Once they had demonstrated these skills, they moved on to Level 2, where they applied their learning on quieter local roads. This stage introduced them to real-life situations such as road positioning, awareness of traffic, and safe decision-making while cycling.

The progress made by the children was impressive. Many pupils began the week feeling uncertain, but through determination and practice, they quickly grew in confidence. It was particularly encouraging to see pupils supporting one another and celebrating each other’s achievements as they mastered new challenges.
Bikeability provides more than just cycling skills; it equips children with the confidence to travel safely and responsibly, promoting independence as they prepare for the transition to secondary school. It also encourages a healthy, active lifestyle and a greater awareness of road safety.
We are extremely proud of all 24 Year 6 pupils who took part. Their positive attitudes, resilience, and enthusiasm made the week a great success. We would also like to thank the ESCC instructors for delivering such a high-quality and engaging programme.
This experience has ensured that our pupils are better prepared to cycle safely in their communities, and we look forward to seeing them continue to build on these important life skills
