Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards Ceremony

Congratulations to our Year 10 students who have achieved their Duke of Edinburgh’s Bronze Award!

Last year Hailsham Academy enrolled it’s first cohort of Year 9 students into the Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards (DofE), a programme we are proud to champion at the school to help our young people develop skills, resilience and self-belief.

Each young person builds their own DofE programmes, picking their own activities and choosing which cause to volunteer for – in order to achieve a Bronze, Silver or Gold DofE Award. Through DofE, our staff ambassadors help the students to take on their own challenges, follow their passions, make a difference to their communities and discover talents they never knew they had. A highlight for students and staff alike is the 2-day expedition, which took place within the South Downs National Park in the summer.

On Monday 15 December we had the pleasure of hosting our Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards Celebration for our first cohort of Bronze Award students, where we presented them with their certificates and badges for the hard work they have completed. Students and their families sat back and enjoyed watching a roll of photos from the summer expedition before individual achievements were celebrated.

Over the year students committed to a range of programs from developing their skills in activities; such as crochet, coding and learning a musical instrument, to improving their fitness with walking, team sports and cycling.

The hardest, but perhaps most rewarding section was volunteering. Many students supported activities for younger children or tidied up their environment with weekly litter picks, whilst others supported charities they felt passionate about.  

Together they gave 192 hours to helping others, spent more than 276 hours doing physical activity and over 300 hours learning a skill. We couldn’t be prouder of them. 

We hope the students recognise just how well they have done to achieve this award and treasure their badges, certificates and memories.
