English in Key Stage 3
Curriculum Intent: To nurture and expand students’ passion for reading by immersing them into inspirational, informative, and provocative texts, that will cultivate curiosity and exploration.
By exposing students to a diverse and rich selection of genres, forms, and writers, we will stretch students to appreciate the craft of the writer, the complexities of the language and the ingenious structure of the texts we delve into to ensure they have the skills and knowledge required to analyse texts successfully. Understanding will be enriched by examining contextual influences that shape and continually mould reactions to a text and considering a writer’s original intent.
Applying the writer’s craft to their own writing, students will catapult their writing skills into exciting directions, experimenting with differing forms, styles, and tones, clearly expressing their opinions and ideas with flair and creativity.
At the core of KS3 learning is vocabulary. Our aim is to expose, explain and apply a rich and challenging pool of lexis into our KS3 curriculum to produce learners that are confident in decoding language and applying a judicious and ambitious range of vocabulary, both eloquently in their spoken language and with sophisticated style in their written work.
