Waste Less, Taste More

Waste Less, Taste More

Over Terms 3 and 4, our Primary Phase pupils took part in an exciting challenge set by our catering partners, Chartwells: reduce the amount of food waste left on their plates — and they rose to it brilliantly!

Through lively assemblies, children discovered just how much food is wasted in schools and explored simple, practical ways to cut down leftovers both at home and in the dining hall. They quickly learnt that even small changes can have a big impact on the environment — and on family budgets too.

Our fantastic School Council led the way, weighing and recording food waste each day. Their teamwork, commitment and enthusiasm kept the whole school motivated — and the results were incredible. In just four weeks, pupils reduced food waste by an impressive one third, the highest reduction across the entire project!

But the learning didn’t stop there…

As part of their reward, every class took part in hands-on cookery workshops, where pupils rolled up their sleeves and got creative in the kitchen. Using a range of kitchen equipment, children built practical skills and confidence while discovering how to make the most of ingredients.

One highlight? Pupils worked together to create a delicious stir fry, learning how simple, fresh cooking can transform leftovers into something exciting and tasty.

These workshops not only developed essential life skills but also reinforced the importance of reducing waste in a fun, meaningful way.

A huge well done to all our pupils — and especially our dedicated School Council — for proving that when we work together, small actions really can make a big difference.
